CANCER HUNT INITIATIVE

Clinician Overview & Introduction

Precision oncology support for veterans — designed to augment care, not disrupt it.

INTRODUCTION

SOTERIA Precision Medicine Foundation is reaching out to explore a potential partnership in service of a population we believe deserves greater access to precision oncology: our nation's veterans.

SOTERIA is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit whose Cancer Hunt Initiative was built around a straightforward but urgent premise: veterans facing cancer diagnoses should have access to comprehensive genomic profiling and biomarker analysis, regardless of insurance, at no cost to the patient and at no additional administrative burden their care team, treating oncologist, or medical institution.

We are actively seeking to partner with clinicians, researchers, and institutions serving veteran and military populations in order to expand access to robust genomic testing, support treating teams with actionable data, and contribute to a growing body of exposure-related oncology research.

Our goal is to inform and support the care you are already providing.

Returning meaningful molecular insights to you and your patient, opening doors to relevant clinical trials, and ensuring no veteran falls through the cracks simply due to lack of access.

THE NEED — WHY THIS INITIATIVE EXISTS

~1 in 7

Active-duty deaths known caused by cancer 2010–2020

Age 28

Average age of service members studied

+40%

More cancer deaths than combat deaths in the final decade of war

From Vietnam and Agent Orange to Gulf War Illness to the 9/11 responder crisis, the pattern is consistent: toxic exposures, delayed recognition, and preventable deaths. The Post-9/11 generation is following the same trajectory. SOTERIA exists to interrupt that pattern.

WHAT SOTERIA PROVIDES

  • Dedicated nurse navigation for test requisition support, logistics management, and patient education

  • Medical records consolidation and case summary preparation

  • Somatic Sequencing — Whole Exome, Transcriptome, and Whole Genome Sequencing Research-Use Only (WGS-RUO with TGen / City of Hope)

  • Germline Sequencing — multi-cancer panel specifically designed detect heritable germline mutations

  • Molecular interpretation, pathway analysis, and CureMatch predictive analytics (when applicable)

  • Clinical trial identification and informed treatment pathway support

  • Multidisciplinary RUO Molecular Tumor Board review for complex cases

  • Longitudinal follow-up and population molecular analysis

WHAT SOTERIA DOES NOT DO

  • Replace oncology care or direct treatment decisions

  • Transfer patients away from their treating team

  • Disrupt existing clinical workflows

  • Require referrals through the VA — any pathway qualifies

Supported by a multidisciplinary team of nurse navigators, PhD-level biomarker scientists, oncology physicians, and logistics coordinators — SOTERIA manages the logistics from medical record collection, test requisitioning, to patient education to reduce the burden on clinical teams.
